Can anyone identify this plant? It's growing in a shaded, woody area in zone 4. It just spontaneously popped up. I'm trying to figure out if it could be useful or if it is just pretty.

Looks like something in the milkweed family. Good for butterflies- particularly monarchs, but not edible. Does make pretty flowers which smell nice and pods in the fall that are fun to play with.
